Dam revellers threaten our safety

"Anonymous" from Escombe Avenue writes: The problem with unruly people partying at the dam over weekends and public holidays is getting worse.

Saturday, September 28, was one of those noisy days at the dam and, as the day progressed, it got worse.

At approximately 8.15pm my husband noticed a large number of people climbing over the palisades at the dam.

People from inside the dam area were passing boxes of liquor over the palisades.

The liquor was carried across the street and hidden in the shrubs on the pavement outside our house.

My husband called 10111 and reported the incident.

After about 10 minutes there had been no response to the phone call and he called the police sector numbers in the Brakpan Herald.

The first number rang and there was no reply, the second number had a voice recorder and he left a message.

The third number said that a vehicle was on its way and we then noticed blue lights at the dam, but nobody came to our house.

The people in the street were chanting in front of the house and taxis stopped and the liquor was loaded into taxis.

I called 10111 again and only then did the Metro Police come to the place where the liquor was passed over the palisades and the people fled the scene.

The police found a municipal dustbin filled with liquor and apart from that there were several plastic bags and boxes filled with liquor, which were then loaded into the police vehicle.

The situation has become so bad that we no longer feel safe in our own home.

When is this problem going to be solved, or must somebody be harmed before this situation is addressed?
