Police crack down on illegal business

An illegal and unhygienic liquor outlet, situated on the corner of Northdene and High Avenue, as closed down by the SAPS on Thursday, last week.

The step comes after days of proper observation by several role players, and the operation was a combined effort by members of the Brakpan SAPS; Organised Crime, Germiston; Home Affairs, Springs; The Liquor Board, Johannesburg; Brakpan Health Department and the Railway Police.

Liquor to the value of between R2 000 and R3 000 was confiscated by the police, as well as about 100 animal hides and about 50kg of rotten meat.

According to the spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS, Capt Joep Joubert, the meat was prepared outside the outlet, under very unhygienic circumstances.

The health department took the hides and meat to Heidelberg, where they were disposed of.

Two gambling machines that were used for illegal gambling activities were also confiscated.

Home Affairs arrested nine illegal immigrants, and the Brakpan SAPS arrested two men, aged 24 and 36.

The two suspects will appear in the Brakpan Magistrates Court soon, on charges of dealing in liquor illegally and also on a charge of illegal gambling.

Joubert explained that the operation followed numerous complaints and a petition from residents in the area.

“Observations were made over a period of time, which lead to the unexpected action that we took,” said Joubert.

“With this we are also sending out a strong warning to people who are operating illegal businesses.

“We are not going to tolerate it and action will most certainly be taken.”

  1. Just wondering about this article. Seems as no observation is being done to see the aftermath of the closure of the shebeen and the meat issue. We still see the meat being “processed” in the street. Drug sellers still sitting on the pavement. It seems as the “Shebeen” has moved into the house next to the Shebeen.

Perhaps Captain Joep need to forward me his e-mail address that I can forward him photos on the goings on this corner.
