Crime Prevention Wardens deployed

Brakpan police thankful for the assistance the wardens will provide.

Brakpan SAPS station commander Brigadier Fredl Jonck has welcomed the deployment of 1030 Crime Prevention Wardens in the Ekurhuleni Eastern Corridor.

The wardens have been deployed across Gauteng in an initiative to fight crime in the province. Jonk attended the wardens’ passing-out parade (graduation ceremony) in Soshanguve on April 30.

The Ekurhuleni Eastern Corridor consists of 39 police stations and the prioritised policing areas include Tsakani, Springs, Benoni, Alberton, Germiston, Thembisa South and North, and Kempton Park.

“The deployment of the wardens will focus on prioritised townships with elevated numbers of gender-based violence, drugs and substance abuse, cable theft, illegal mining, illegal informal settlements, rape, murder and hijackings,” said Brakpan SAPS communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

The crime prevention wardens will be deployed daily at noted hotspots, problematic schools, taxi ranks, checking taverns for compliance and will perform foot patrols for visibility and to crack down on drug dealers.

“The SAPS will be working together with the traffic department and both bodies will regulate weekly meetings to confer crime patterns and deployment,” added Buthelezi.

“The unit will function together with the Community Policing Forums and patrollers.”

Jonck stated that the unit will indisputably aid in the fight against lawlessness, and the SAPS is thankful and welcomes the helping hands.
