City vaccinates over half a million for measles

The city aims to vaccinate over half a million children with the vaccine drive.

The City of Ekurhuleni vaccinated 526 000 youngsters against measles since the beginning of the year.

The city introduced the vaccination programme that targets children between six months and 15 years, because of the threat of measles to young people.

“Our target is a million youngsters, and we hoped to make it by the end of March. Although we could not make it, we are satisfied with the progress and we will continue until we reach the million,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

Measles is a very contagious respiratory infection that causes a total body skin rash and flu-like symptoms.

They encouraged parents to sign consent forms to permit healthcare workers to administer the vaccines to eligible school-going children.

The measles vaccination drive will run until further notice.
