Community demands justice for hit-and-run victim

Friends and family of Ceaser Mrwetyane remember him fondly, and wish to see swift justice.

A crowd of people gathered along Voortrekker Road last Friday demanding justice for Brakpan resident Ceaser Mrwetyane, who was killed in a hit-and-run the previous evening.

The 30-year-old, who worked at Choppies and lived nearby, was on his way home at around 20:00 on January 19 when he was fatally struck by a vehicle.

According to Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Pearl van Staad, a docket has been opened for culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving but no arrests have been made.

Friends and family of Mrwetyane assembled near Choppies the next day, some bearing signs reading ‘Justice for Ceaser’ and ‘We are Ceaser’, where they observed a moment of silence and urged speeding drivers to slow down.

From there, the group proceeded to the Brakpan police station hoping for swift justice.

Ceaser’s parents, Patricia Nobuntu and Denis Mrwetyane, were on the scene receiving condolences from friends and colleagues.
