Season ends in heartbreak for young side

Narrow defeat for Brakpan's U21s.

Brakpan Rugby Club’s U21 season ended in heartbreak as an error led to losing 37-36 in the final of the Valke League to North-West University in Springs.

Brakpan went a season without defeat, only to stumble at the last hurdle against a team they had already beaten three times this year.

The team from Bosman Stadium will look back to the dying minutes of the match and think that they made the wrong call kicking a penalty for touch, instead of kicking for the poles.

They lost the line-out that followed and thus went the opportunity to be crowned champions.

“That’s the thing. Inexperience can cost you,” said club chairperson Harry Nieuwenhuis.

He has applauded the team and feels they will be good for the club in years to come.

“About 80% of these guys will be in the first team next year. I think we will have a wonderful young, but talented first team next year.”
