Balaclava-clad robbers make off with copper cables valued at R2m

Gang of men target Vulcania business and make off with valuable haul.

Brakpan police have urged security guards to be more vigilant and mindful of the property they are guarding.

This follows a robbery at a Vulcania business last Thursday during which copper cables, valued at R2m, were stolen.

Local SAPS spokesperson Captain Pearl van Staad told the Herald two security guards were on duty at the main gate of the Uranium Road company when a truck arrived at 23:49.

“They thought it was a delivery. After the truck entered the yard, five to six men, all armed with firearms, got out of the truck,” she said.

“One of them took the guards’ hand-radio and panic button and the pair was taken to the office in the factory.

“They were instructed to lay on the ground and keep quiet, otherwise they would be shot.”

Contractors living on the premises were also rounded up and brought to the office. All their cellphones were stolen.

“The intruders cut off the locks of two containers outside,” said van Staad.

“Copper cables were loaded on the truck with a forklift.

“Power tools were also taken, as well as a Nissan NP200 belonging to a contracting company. The vehicle was recovered the next day in Tsakani.”

Van Staad stated the robbers were wearing balaclavas and were dressed in black overalls.

She added no shots were fired and no injuries were reported. A case of business robbery is under investigation.
