Cleaner works towards his dream job

General manager recognises artistic talent and opens doors for upskilling.

With a certificate in marketing, cleaner Lindile Guda is working towards one day landing a position within a corporate.

The 36-year-old completed a marketing course at Ekurhuleni East TVET College after he matriculated, but despite this found that he could not get a job without a diploma.

For the past four years, he has worked for Masana Cleaning Services at Carnival City. One of Guda’s passions is sketch art, a talent he developed at the age of six.

“I draw mostly portraits of people from Tsakani where I stay, but I can draw anything. People send me their photos and I work from that, either in pencil or charcoal which is most popular,” he said.

After Guda’s sketch of Carnival City’s general manager Annemie Turk caught her eye, his desire to job shadow and assist those in the marketing team became a reality, and he has been temping since March.

Guda assists in the marketing department outside his Masana work schedule.

“I help out the marketing team half-day, between 08:00 and 13:30, five days a week and then clock into work at Masana from 14:00 to 22:00 Friday to Tuesday,” he said.

“This means I don’t have a day off, but I want to learn about graphic design and marketing more than I need to rest. This is my passion. I am committed to pushing hard until I have learned what I need to know.

“I am learning a lot from DTP operator Tebogo Ramolobeng, and even though it is an unpaid position, I am appreciative of the experience and know I have already grown in the short time I have been here.”

Although Guda is unmarried and does not have children, he supports his seven-year-old niece Olwethu Guda, who stays with his aunt when he is at work.

“I want to set a good example for Olwethu and show her not to give up on our dreams and if we want something to work hard to achieve it,” said Guda.

Turk stated that Guda is talented and has a passion for sketching, graphic design and marketing.

“Carnival City is pleased to be able to help someone so willing to learn, upskill and improve themselves,” she said.
