Plenty of work ahead for CCC Brakpan Rugby Club

The event will see 11 clubs in action, with the first match starting at 09:00.

CCC Brakpan Rugby Club continues its preparations for the 2022 season, knowing they still have a bit of work to do before the season kicks off against North-West University on April 2.

On Saturday, they held a practice game with the Valke Currie Cup side at Bosman Stadium, and the club appeared to be second best on the field.

Brakpan struggled as they had lost their front row, with their props and hooker testing positive for Covid-19 before the match.

“They had the better of us. Their lineouts were better and the scrums from our side were very bad,” said Brakpan’s chairperson, Harry Nieuwenhuis.

With the Valke dominating upfront, the club side did not enjoy much ball possession to threaten their opponents with.

“It was just a warm-up game and they were way too strong for us. You could see the difference between a Currie Cup and a club side,” said the chairperson.

“We are hoping for a better showing going forward, but we were successful in having a proper training session, that’s for sure.”

As a team, the club would not have wanted an easy session, so the tough time will show them what they need to work on.

“Our fitness is not even close to where they (Valke) are. Remember, they have been training three times a day since September. We need to seriously work on our line-outs.

“Our scrums also need to improve. We also spent a lot of time defending and our defence was not up to scratch on the day,” said Nieuwenhuis.

Brakpan will have another chance to measure their progress on Saturday when they host their annual Rugby Day, with several clubs taking each other on at the Bosman Stadium. The local side will face Harlequins.

“We will see how we match up with the clubs from the Bulls league,” said Nieuwenhuis.

The event will see 11 clubs in action, with the first match starting at 09:00.

“It’s important for us to do well against Harlequins because we have been invited by the Bulls Union to play in what they call a heritage tournament that’s going to be held in Pretoria over the Easter weekend. It’s like the old club championships they used to play.

“We will be playing against Blue Bulls clubs at the tournament,” he said.

“We are very proud that we have been invited because it’s like the old Gold Cup and it’s all the top teams in South Africa.”
