Spirits lifted for netball club

The time period when Netball Freaks could not play was clearly difficult for the players.

Netball Freaks’ players were excited to return to training recently after months of no action due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Not having played since March has seen the players more excited than ever as new players joined the club.

“We now have 45 club members. We are super excited and have grown in comradery,” said club captain Angelique van der Merwe.

Getting started, however, was not easy.

“We were stiff the first couple of days upon resumption of training, but it has become easier now. Players are so excited to get back that even when the coach, Elzabe Gertenbach, blows the whistle to end practice we ask for an extra 10 minutes to keep playing,” said van der Merwe.

The time period when Netball Freaks could not play was clearly difficult for the players.

“The lockdown took its toll on us,” said the captain.

“We had to work our way back to a routine. It was like they gave a child a new toy and then took it back.”

Despite the eagerness to play, van der Merwe did point out that they still follow protocol to make sure that they can practice safely.

“We make sure that we check temperatures and the balls are properly sanitised. We have all downloaded an app on our phones to check our temperatures and then send the reading to the coach,” said the skipper.

Freaks will be looking to host a tournament on September 24 at a venue yet to be confirmed.

The club is also looking to raise funds for the Red Cross and have promised to announce a fund-raiser in the coming weeks.
