Mayor’s office warns of Facebook fraudsters

The mayor's personal Facebook account was hacked.

The office of the mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mzwandile Masina, has warned of a scam carried out by a person on Facebook claiming to be Masina.

The mayor’s personal Facebook account was hacked and there have been reports from members of the public about Masina allegedly messaging them on the platform and soliciting money.

The scammer solicits amounts of money ranging from R800 from people by requesting an e-wallet and claims he is struggling to open his banking application on his smartphone.

The mayor’s office urges the public not to respond to these messages and under no condition should they send the scammer money.

Members of the public who receive any suspicious request from a social media account claiming to be that of Masina can report it to 0800 102 201.

The municipality’s Information, Communications and Technology Department and the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department are currently investigating the incident.
