Criminal activities easier to spot during lockdown

Benoni Flying Squad makes 15 arrests.

From March 27 to March 30, Benoni Flying Squad members made 15 arrests, recovered two motor vehicles, two trailers and one firearm.

“With lockdown in place, persons acting suspiciously or roaming around, and criminal activities, are easier to spot,” said WO Grant Giblin, communication officer for the Benoni Flying Squad.

This led to the arrest of 11 people for drinking in public, possession of drugs (crystal methamphetamine and heroine), possession of stolen copper, possession of a dangerous weapon (knife) and trespassing.

The arrests took place at the corner of Prince George Avenue and Voortrekker Road in Brakpan, the Madala Hostel in Alexandra, Snake Road in Benoni and Blake Street in Farrarmere, Benoni.

In Etwatwa, members responding to a complaint arrested one person for attempted murder and confiscated a pistol with nine live rounds of ammunition in Extension 24.

A separate incident in the Barcelona informal settlement led to the arrest of two people after a business robbery.

At the Basothong Hostel in Vosloorus, Boksburg, a man was found in possession of rocks (cocaine).

He was arrested immediately and the drugs confiscated.

The two vehicles recovered were a grey Hyundai i10, which was found along along Michael Street, Centurion, and a white truck with two trailers along Third Road in Bredell.

The Hyundai was taken during a house robbery on a Mooinooi case (North West Province) and the truck was hijacked on the N12 highway Bapsfontein off-ramp.

Investigation continues in all cases.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 36 years, will be appearing in the local magistrate’s courts facing charges of possession of drugs, attempted murder, armed robbery, possession of stolen goods, possession of dangerous weapon and trespassing.
