Councillor sees red over sewage spill

"One would think with the current threat of the coronavirus, the municipality would take sewer blockages more seriously."

The City of Ekurhuleni is not honouring its turn-around times when attending to service delivery issues.

This is according to DA councillor for Ward 105 in Brakpan Stefanie Ueckermann, and follows a sewage spill in Dalview.

Metro officials only attended to the blocked sewer line in End Street almost a week after it was reported.

Ueckermann told the Herald the blockage was reported to the Ekurhuleni Call Centre on March 2 and the reference number indicated a 48-hour turn-around time.

“On March 4 no action had been taken to unblock the system and the matter was escalated directly to the officials.

“On Friday, another 48 hours had passed and we were still sitting with thousands of litres of raw sewage running into the nearby wetland.”

Ueckermann explained the sewage could seep into the underground water supply used by nearby farmers.

“One would think with the current threat of the coronavirus, the municipality would take sewer blockages more seriously,” she added.

The blockage was cleared over the weekend.
