Local crime issues highlighted at SAPS meeting

Blue light hijackers are still active along the R23.

Brakpan police used a meeting with local security providers to highlight the scourge of trio crimes (house robbery, business robbery and hijackings) in the Brakpan area.

The meeting took place at the Brakpan Police Station on Monday morning and was attended by representatives from the EMPD, local security providers and community groups.

Business and house robberies have seen an increase as the festive season approaches, but of particular concern to the local SAPS is hijackings along Heidelberg Road (R23).

The area, specifically the stretch of road near Makro Carnival, has been plagued for months by hijackers masquerading as SAPS members or traffic officers.

The perpetrators, who travel in unmarked cars fitted with blue lights, pull over motorists and then rob them of their vehicles.

The R554 (Elsburg Road) has also seen an increase in hijackings.

Police implored motorists to be extra vigilant when travelling along these roads, and to drive to the nearest police station if they suspect they are being pulled over by hijackers.

Motorists are advised to put their hazards on, acknowledge that you have seen the “officers” and indicate that they must follow you.

It is important you do not just drive off, make sure they know to follow you.

Motorists can also call 10111 and explain to the operator that they are in a hijacking hotspot and have been instructed to pull over by the occupants of an unmarked vehicle with blue lights.

Police will continue to monitor the area and motorists are reminded to report suspicious-looking people, vehicles or activities to 10111 or to the Brakpan SAPS on 011 744 7100.
