Carnival City plants trees to mark World Environment Day

Carnival City joined the rest of the world to honour World Environment Day on June 5.

Employees rolled up their sleeves to plant trees at the complex, as well as at Buhlebemfundo Secondary School in Tsakane.

“With the theme for this year’s World Environment Day being ‘Air Pollution’, we felt it fitting to plant indigenous naartjie trees at Carnival City and at a local school,” said Annemie Turk, Carnival City general manager.

“Trees benefit the environment in many ways. Specifically, they absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, from the air and release oxygen.”

World Environment Day is a United Nations’ global event which started in 1972 and is celebrated by thousands of communities worldwide.

World Environment Day 2019 urges governments, industries, communities and individuals to explore renewable energy and green technologies, and improve air quality worldwide.

Dust masks will be distributed to all Sun International units to raise awareness amongst employees and encourage them to help create a less polluted, more sustainable world for our future generations.

Naartjie trees will also be planted by employees from Time Square in Menlyn Maine at Mamelodi schools adopted by the Corporate Social Investment department.
