Police chase nets five business robbery suspects

Robbers use dad's car in robbery.

Members of the Brakpan SAPS Crime Prevention Unit have been commended for the speedy arrest of five men last week, following a robbery at a local supermarket.

One of the suspects was found in possession of a fake police ID.

Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for Brakpan police, told the Herald three men entered the shop along Escombe Avenue at about 12.45pm on Tuesday and held the 35-year-old cashier at gunpoint.

They ransacked the shop and demanded cash.

“The suspects took airtime, toiletries, cold drinks, cash and cigarettes, and fled in a silver grey Audi,” she said.

“The vehicle was spotted around Brakpan North and it sped off after police tried stopping it.”

Police pursued the vehicle, eventually bringing it to a halt along McAlpine Street in Rynsoord, Benoni.

“During the arrest, police discovered a police appointment certificate, on which the ID photo had been replaced with a photo of one of the suspects,” said van Staad.

All goods stolen from the supermarket were recovered and police seized two firearms and ammunition.

Van Staad explained that the Audi used as the getaway vehicle belonged to the father of one of the suspects.

Aged between 30 and 40, the suspects are facing charges of business robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and impersonating a police officer.

They are also suspected of being involved in other serious and violent crimes.

“Brakpan SAPS station commander Brig Fredl Jonck commended the members for a job well done and urged the community to continue reporting crime,” added van Staad.
