Police shoot out tyres to end car chase

Multiple charges were laid against him at the Brakpan Police Station.

A man was arrested in Brakpan on Friday after police shot the tyres of his vehicle during a movie-style car chase.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago explained the events unfolded on Friday morning around 10am when an EMPD SWAT member received a call from a colleague informing him about a man driving dangerously on the N17 highway near Wadeville in Germiston.

The constable joined his colleague in pursuit of the driver.

“The suspect took the Heidelberg turn-off from the N17 and continued to drive at breakneck speed through the Brakpan CBD,” said Kgasago.

“The SAPS Flying Squad joined the chase on Prince George Avenue and the man was eventually arrested on Main Reef Road.”

According to Kgasago, several efforts to stop the man failed, including blocking the roads using vehicles.

“Since the man posed a danger to other road users, the police, as a last resort, opted to disable the vehicle by shooting at its tyres,” he said.

“The vehicle was eventually immobilised at 10.25am and the driver arrested.”

The man reportedly told police he was fighting a “spiritual war”.

Multiple charges were laid against him at the Brakpan Police Station.

Kgasago added that based on the peculiar conduct of the man, arrangements were made to apply via the courts to send him for a psychological evaluation in order to ascertain whether he would be fit to stand trial.
