Rusted streetlight poses danger

"I went and had a look and realised it was even more serious than I thought."

Dawie Joubert writes by email:

There is a streetlight in the process of falling over at the corner of Reitz and Paul Kruger streets in Dalview.

I have reported the matter to council, as has my neighbour.

What happens if this pole falls on a car stopped at the four-way stop?

What happens if this pole falls on children waiting for their parents when school comes out?

These poles carry overhead power lines and people could get electrocuted.

Council came out to replace the faulty lamps in Reitz Street and replaced the lamp on the pole that is about to fall over.

Council workers then arrived one Friday afternoon around 3pm.

They got out of their truck and stared at the pole.

Two workers then walked to the pole and cut the grass around the pole.

Again they just stood back and stared at the pole.

Next moment, they got back into their truck and drove off, never to come back.

I went and had a look and realised it was even more serious than I thought.

The pole is completely rusted.

Why did they not do something, at least support the pole or work overtime to fix it.

Clearly, they couldn’t care!

Editor’s note: City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe responded as follows:

“The complaint was attended to and the pole was fixed,” he said.

“We appreciate that residents notify us about the problems they encounter with regard to service delivery.

“It is through reporting that the city is able to attend to service delivery issues.”
