United win penultimate match

Batting first, it was again the bat of their skipper Justin Gamble that did the talking.

Brakpan-based United Cricket Club’s Premier League XI picked up their third straight win in the bottom six of the Eastern Premier League with the victory against Duduza, at Willowmoore Park, on March 3.

The United captain made it three centuries in as many matches with a superb score of 151 off 112 deliveries (including 14 fours and six sixes).

Gamble’s knock helped pave the way for a big score of 334/9 to be set in United’s 50-over batting innings.

With the ball, it was Dylan Rayner who was the main wicket-taker with figures of 5/42 in seven overs.

His effort, along with braces from Branden Grutter and Jaundre Johnson, was key in bowling out the opposition for 259 runs in 42 overs, 75 runs shy of the target set by United.

“It was a good win in the end,” said Gamble.

“We will take 334 runs any day.

“We had steady contributions throughout our innings and it is always great if someone can really cash in and bat through the innings.

“With the ball, Dylan and Shaun Fourie were great up front, but we really let them get too many runs after having them five wickets down quite early.

“We did bowl 63 extras and that is really disappointing and not the standard we are trying to keep.

“We still have a lot of work to do in preparation for next season, but for now I’m happy that we are getting some wins to end off this season.”

The team’s last match of the season will see them host Tembisa at Hosking Park on March 10.

The first delivery is scheduled to be bowled at 10am.
