United bats KwaThema out the park

Batting first, United did well to put together a score of 308/8 in 50 overs.

Brakpan-based United Cricket Club’s Premier League XI enjoyed their second win in the bottom six of the Eastern Premier League with a victory over KwaThema at St Dunstan’s College in Benoni on February 23.

Their scheduled match against Springs Old Boys the weekend before was, like all other matches in the Easterns region, drawn due to rain.

Batting first, United did well to put together a score of 308/8 in 50 overs, with Easterns player Kabelo Sekhukhune’s 72 at the top of the order, setting the tone for the big score.

His effort, combined with a second successive score of 100-plus from the United skipper Justin Gamble (who scored 119 unbeaten runs), steered United to the big score.

Gamble scored another unbeaten century a fortnight back against Bedfordview.

With the ball, KwaThema put up a good challenge in the chase, but were wrapped up eventually in 43.2 overs with 231 runs on the scoreboard, a 77-run victory for United.

Sekhukhune was again involved in the action, bagging bowling figures of 2/25 in five overs as well as Gamble (2/46 in 8.2 overs) and Branden Grutter (2/52 in 10 overs), who also bagged a brace of wickets.

“It was a good win on Sunday,” said Gamble.

“Again, we weren’t very good with the ball or in the field.

“I felt we could have kept them under 200 runs.

“We were good in some patches and poor in others.

“Kabelo was great up front with the bat and laid a good foundation for us to get a good total.

“Hopefully, we can get all the disciplines right in the next two games and end our season off well with some good wins.”

The team will next play Duduza at Willowmoore Park’s B-field on March 3.
