Brakpan bulldogs brilliant in Benoni

Eastern Gauteng Wrestling hosted the biggest Eastern Gauteng Wrestling Open in history on February 16 at the John Barrable Hall in Benoni.

Gussie Bartlett of the South African Wrestling Federation (SAWF) said that 42 clubs and 549 entrants took to the mat on the day.

Brakpan Wrestling Club sent 24 wrestlers to the tournament and the club’s members scooped up 12 medals in total.

Gold medals were won by Klippies Jansen, Sion Erasmus, Fernando Booysen, Martin Erasmus and Arghale Muller.

Silver medals were won by Rudolph du Preez and Jacques Kriel while bronze medals were won by Krummels Jansen, Caleb Botha, Ricardo van Zyl, Daniel Geyser and Willie Geyser.

Brakpan Wrestling Club’s Fernando Booysen was a gold medal winner at the Eastern Gauteng Wrestling Open. He and a few other Brakpan wrestlers will later fly the flag for South Africa at the 2019 Cadet, Junior and Senior African Championships in Tunisia in March.

Meanwhile, the club has had a few of its wrestlers included in the South African national team for the 2019 Cadet, Junior and Senior African Championships to be held in Tunisia from March 25 to 31.

Fernando Booysen (junior freestyle, 51kg to 55kg), Jacques Kriel (junior freestyle, 92kg to 97kg) and Martin Erasmus (senior freestyle, 87kg to 97kg) will raise the Brakpan and Eastern Gauteng banner at the continental challenge.
