Arrests made in school burglary case

Investigations are ongoing.

Gauteng police have welcomed the arrest of four suspects in connection with the burglary at Menzi Primary School in Langaville.

The multimillion-rand state-of-the-art school was handed over to the community and learners on the first day of school on January 9 by Clr Lesiba Mpya, the City of Ekurhuleni’s acting mayor, Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi (Brakpan Herald, January 18, “State-of-the-art school opened in Langaville”), but became the target of burglars less than a week later.

“An intelligence-driven operation by detectives from Ekurhuleni East Cluster and Trio Task Team led members to the Johannesburg CBD where four suspects aged between 23 and 38 were arrested,” said Capt Kay Makhubele, spokesperson for Gauteng police.

Police recovered 22 tablets and three laptops believed to have been taken from the school.

Makhubele added investigations are ongoing as the possibility of more arrests cannot be ruled out.

Police are also searching for the remaining stolen items and have appealed to members of the community who may have information to contact the Tsakane Police Station on 011 363 5347 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.

The suspects were due to appear in the Tsakane Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
