United outclass Tembisa at home

United’s skipper Justin Gamble won the morning coin toss and decided to put his team into bat first.

Brakpan-based United Cricket Club’s Premier League XI claimed their fourth victory in five Eastern Premier League matches when they hosted Tembisa Cricket Club at Hosking Park on November 11.

It was a move that bore fruit for the Brakpan side as they smashed the Tembisan bowling attack to all parts of the Brakpan cricket oval.

Despite losing opening batsman Kabelo Sekhukhune with just one run on the scoreboard, United’s André Johnson, Anton Muller and captain Gamble took the game to the Tembisans.

The big-hitting opener Johnson hit three sixes and six fours in an innings of 50 runs from 43 deliveries before he was caught out with the score at 104.

Gamble joined Muller at the wicket and the pair added another 54 runs before Muller was caught out.

He played a quality knock of 80 runs from 67 deliveries which included four sixes and nine fours.

Fresh off a score of 66 not out in the Saturday First League match against Benoni Northerns Cricket Club the day before, Gamble continued his rich vein of form with the willow by smashing 108 runs from 83 deliveries including four sixes and 17 fours in the innings.

When Gamble was dismissed LBW he had helped guide his team over the 300 mark.

United was eventually bowled all out by Tembisa in the 46th over with 335 runs on the scoreboard.

With the ball United made light work of the Tembisa batting line-up, cleaning them up for 114 runs in 22 overs.

Young bowler Simphiwe Mbatha, who bagged a five-wicket haul against KwaThema the weekend prior, again achieved another fifer – a remarkable feat.

Mbatha achieved bowling figures of 5/28 in five overs while opening bowler Anton Muller was also excellent with his return of 4/42 in 9.5 overs.

Mbatha and Muller’s efforts ensured a 221-run, bonus point win for the United side.

“It was a pretty good all-round performance from the guys,” said Gamble.

“I would have liked us to bat out the full 50 overs as our last six wickets fell very quickly, but in the end we would take 335 any day.

“We have some good momentum going into what will be three tough matches before the December break.

“We are in a good space at the moment,” added the skipper.

They will be in action again on November 18 against a strong Alberton Cricket Club at the Lindeque Oval in Alberton.

Meanwhile, the club’s Premier Reserve League XI also enjoyed a rampaging performance against Tembisa on Sunday, this time at Willowmoore Park’s A-field.

United smashed a 432/4 in 50 overs with Dillan Alberts becoming the first United player to hit a double century.

He hit a brilliant 212 runs in the innings.

Shane Speed (97 runs) was the next best performer with the bat.

A hapless Tembisan outfit was then bowled out in just 12.5 overs with a paltry 44 runs on the board to set up a mammoth 388-run win for the Brakpan team.

Anthony Kruger bagged a five-wicket haul with 5/14 in five overs while Juan van der Merwe enjoyed figures of 3/11 in five overs.
