Red hot United too good for Duduza at home

It was the team’s third Eastern Premier League encounter of the 2018/2019 campaign.

After defeat to Boksburg away from home the weekend prior, Brakpan’s United Cricket Club Premier XI were hoping to get back to winning ways when they hosted Duduza at Hosking Park on October 28.

On a hot day in Brakpan, United’s players were just as fiery as the weather was.

They managed to control the game from the outset to set up a deserved nine-wicket bonus-point win.

United Premier League players celebrate a wicket against Duduza.

After losing the toss and getting put into bat by the Duduza skipper, United went on the charge from the get-go, eventually bowling out their opposition for 109 runs in 27.4 overs.

Opening bowler Anton Muller was excellent up front, bagging impressive bowling figures of 3/30 in his allotted 10 overs while United’s captain Justin Gamble, as a first change bowler, enjoyed a terrific 6.4 over spell with fantastic statistics of 5/20, his slow left-arm bowling bamboozling the Duduza batsmen.

With the willow, United went about their business in chasing down the Duduza score with minimal fuss.

Despite the loss of Dylan Rayner at the top of the batting order with the score at 30/1, big-hitting opener André Johnson and Muller carried the hosts over the line with nine United batsmen still waiting in the clubhouse.

Johnson smashed his way to 53 runs not out from 45 deliveries (three fours and six sixes) while Muller finished on 38 runs not out from 34 balls (four fours and three sixes) to secure a convincing victory.

Skipper Gamble described the result as ‘a perfect bounce-back after the Boksburg defeat’.

“We were really disciplined with the ball and kept Duduza to a low score,” said Gamble.

“With the bat, we never gave them a sniff and got ourselves a good bonus-point win.

“This week we’ll be playing in KwaThema and we will be looking to build on from this last match.

United were bowled all out for 114 runs in 40.1 overs.

Their opponents managed to reach the target within 27 overs to earn an eight-wicket victory.

United’s Directors League team were on the winning side on Sunday.
