Take note of affected roads ahead of the Classic

Back for the 35th edition, the popular East Rand classic is back for a third time in its new spring slot.

The Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle Race, which features a road cycle race, mountain bike (MTB) race, as well as a 5km/10km and 21.1km trail run, is again coming to Carnival City in Brakpan.

Diarise October 27 to 28 now for a race weekend of note.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Germiston and Germiston Wheelers Cycling Club, the main purpose of the event is to raise money for local charities, particularly in support of Rotary Projects, The Rotary Foundation and the further development of amateur cycling in South Africa.

Through this event, the organisers have been able to make significant donations to many needy charities, particularly in Ekurhuleni.

It is exciting times for the road race as it will feature a completely new route.

In order to avoid any accidents and to ease frustrations of other road users, motorists should take heed of the following roads affected by the race:

It important to note that the route has changed from 2017, and no longer uses the R554 between Carnival City and Osborn Road and the R103 between Osborn and Diana roads.

The roads affected by the race on Sunday are as follows:

• R554 (Westbound), between R23 and Van Dyk road (outside Carnival City). Closed between 4am and 1pm.

• R554 (Eastbound), between R23 and Van Dyk road (outside Carnival City). Single lane in both directions between 4am and 1pm.

The rest of the route is shared with traffic as follows:

• R554 (Eastbound) between R23 and R51 in Springs (6am to 10am)

• R51 between R554 and M63 in Nigel (6.10am to 11am)

• M63 between R51/R42 and R550 (6.20am to 11am)

• R550 between M63 and R23, as well as between Diana Road and R23 (7am to noon)

• R23 between R550 to R103 outside Heidelberg North (7am to 10.30am)

• R550 between R103 and Magagula Heights Road (8am to 11am)

• Magagula Heights Road between R550 and R103 (8am to 11am)

• R103 between Magagula Heights road and Diana Road (8am to noon)

• Diana Road between R103 and R550 (8am to noon)

• R23 between R550 and the R554 – this may be closed to traffic on the northbound lanes, pending approval from the EMPD (8am to 1pm).
