The Classic is coming to town again

Back for the 35th edition, the popular East Rand classic is back for a third time in its new spring slot.

The Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle Race, which features a road cycle race, mountain bike (MTB) race, as well as a 5km/10km and 21.1km trail run, is again coming to town.

Diarise October 27 to 28 now for a race weekend of note.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Germiston and Germiston Wheelers Cycling Club, the main purpose of the event is to raise money for local charities, particularly in support of Rotary Projects, The Rotary Foundation and the further development of amateur cycling in South Africa.

Through this event, the organisers have been able to make significant donations to many needy charities, particularly in Ekurhuleni.

The road race (which offers a 58km distance and 110km distance) is perfectly placed three weeks before the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge (the revised route), and one week after the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic.

The road race will once again be a premier seeding event for the 2018 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

It is exciting times for the road race as it will feature a completely new route, with a phrase the organisers have dubbed as ‘traffic-free zones or reduced traffic zones’, whereby they will work with the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department to ensure areas with traffic-free or reduced-traffic zones.

They have also introduced the ‘Developing Cyclists Initiative’ which is a Germiston Wheelers’ initiative to develop young riders.

This initiative has been extended beyond their local community to include a 30 per cent discount for all riders who are 19 years old and younger at December 31, 2018.

It applies to both girls and boys and entries can be done online as usual.

Visit germistonclassic.co.za for online entry information for each event and all other important details about the various race offerings.

A list of affected roads will be published soon.
