Mayor condemns the use of Ekurhuleni’s name in suspected scam targeting entrepreneurs

An investigation is underway to trace the event organisers.

Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina has condemned what seems to be a scam targeting entrepreneurs.

This after the office of the mayor noted a poster circulating on social media about an event allegedly organised for entrepreneurs using the name of the city as a sponsor.

The organisers allege a partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni and “calls on suppliers and entrepreneurs” to partake in the event at a fee.

Masina’s office announced that an investigation is underway to trace the organisers to determine whether an Ekurhuleni official consented to the use of the city’s brand.

In a media statement, the mayor’s office explained that the city is fully committed to transparency on any information related to business and procurement.

“Such information is free and available to the public,” the statement reads.

“The city has embarked on programmes and roadshows such as Ntirhisano, partnering with Seda (Small Enterprise Development Agency) and the Gauteng Provincial Government, to raise awareness about opportunities in the city.

“All these activities are done at no cost to the public.

“Entrepreneurship is highly encouraged and supported by the city and any organisation which seeks to exploit aspirant entrepreneurs will be exposed.”
