Justice is hard to swallow for fast food eatery robber

One employee was assaulted and threatened with a gun.

A KwaThema man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison stay for his involvement in a robbery at the Mall@Carnival.

Mxolisi Godfrey Mbele (41) was one of four men who robbed a fast food eatery at the mall on February 24, last year.

According to information received from Brakpan police, Mbele and his accomplices arrived at the business at around 9.15pm and confronted staff members as they were locking up the shop.

One employee was assaulted and threatened with a gun, and forced to open the safe.

Security guards fired at the robbers as they fled and Mbele was arrested on the scene.

He was recently sentenced in the Brakpan Regional Court and the term of imprisonment is as follows:

• Count one (robbery with aggravating circumstances): 15 years

• Count two (illegal possession of ammunition): five years

• Count three (attempted murder): 10 years

Mbele is serving his sentence at the Boksburg Prison.

The case was successfully investigated by Det WO Doepie du Plessis from the Ekurhuleni Central Trio Task Team.
