Suspected drug lab uncovered in Brakpan North

The suspect claimed the drugs belonged to her husband.

Police discovered a suspected drug laboratory in a house in Brakpan North yesterday (Thursday) and seized drugs with an estimated street value of R1-million.

A 28-year-old Nigerian woman – found with a three-year-old girl – was arrested.

“Information received about a suspected drug laboratory in Brakpan was swiftly acted upon by the EMPD Tracing Unit members in collaboration with the SAPS Ekurhuleni Cluster Crime Intelligence members,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“The law enforcement agencies had to move with speed on receiving the information to prevent the drugs and chemicals from being moved.

“A huge quantity of Cat in its final stages of production contained in pans, and several buckets containing ingredients to manufacture the drug were confiscated.”

Ekurhuleni chief of police Jabulani Mapiyeye commended the success of the joint effort by the EMPD Tracing Unit and SAPS Ekurhuleni Cluster Crime Intelligence.

The chief added that law enforcers will continually make resources available to rid Ekurhuleni of the scourge of drug abuse as well as the crime of drug-dealing.

The suspect claimed the drugs belonged to her husband.

According to Kgasago, continual calls to the “husband” went unanswered.

The child was left in the care of a family member.

The suspect was detained at the Brakpan Police Station on charges of possession of illicit substances and on suspicion of manufacturing and distribution of narcotics.

She is expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court soon.
