Taxi rank shooting suspect nabbed

On April 19, occupants in two Toyota Quantums and a maroon BMW sedan opened fire at a taxi rank in Tsakane whereby the chairperson of the Brakpan Taxi Association sustained serious injuries.

One of several suspects responsible for the attack was apprehended on Thursday afternoon, last week, along the N17 highway eastbound just before the R23 (Heidelberg Road) turnoff in Brakpan.

“The EMPD Public Order Policing Task Team provided back-up to this intelligence-driven hunt for those responsible for the shooting to Johannesburg SAPS Crime Intelligence and the Tactical Response Team members,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“The arrested suspect was apparently the driver of one of the Quantums involved.

“It also emerged that the second Quantum involved – carrying hitmen – was on the day of the shooting being driven by a taxi owner related to the arrestee.

“Gunshots came from all three vehicles.

“It also emerged that the hitmen from outside Gauteng were hired by one of the known suspects.

“The possible link to the death of the previous chairman of the Brakpan Taxi Association by the same group is being investigated.”

Kgasago added that in-depth investigations are underway and more arrests are expected soon.

The impounded Quantum was positively identified as one of the vehicles involved in the shooting and the arrested suspect was detained at the Tsakane Police Station on charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm in a municipal area.
