Fight season starts now

EFC’s fight season is about to begin, promising more power, force and rage than ever before, all under the roof of Carnival City’s Big Top Arena.

This Saturday, March 10, the 67th installment of this popular fighting event brings the most anticipated fight – and the first fight card – of 2018 as action fighter Gordon Roodman takes on stand-up specialist Mzwandile Hlongwa.

Admired for his blood-and-guts performances by fans around the world, Roodman has become a firm favourite at EFC fights, and despite some difficulties over the last few months, he says he is ready to get back into winning position.

Hlongwa, who made his EFC debut in the 49th instalment with a spectacular TKO victory, was recently featured on MMA reality TV show The Fighter.

This show saw 10 fighters from around the world battling it out against one another, and Hlongwa was one of just two South Africans featured.

“It is time to show the world who I am,” said Hlongwa.

“No complaints, no short notice and no medical complications.

“Just wait and see.”

Also on the cards is a bout between current EFC featherweight champion Igue Kabesa and the highly dangerous Brazilian, Paul ‘Bananada’ Silva.

Kabesa was originally meant to fight against former champion Boyd Allen, but Allen withdrew from the bout due to illness.

Silva offers a challenge unlike any that Kabesa has faced before.

Phenomenally experienced, with a professional MMA record of 22-12, he is also a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and a multiple MMA champion.

Originally from Rio de Janeiro, Silva fought out of Team Noguira under the famous Noguira brothers for most of his career.

He recently moved to South Africa to take on a coaching and athlete position at the Fighting Sports Centre with Brendon Katz.

Kabesa had no comment on the opponent and fight change.

As the fight will take place in the heavier weight category, the EFC featherweight belt will not be on the line.

As the co-main event, the bout will be fought over three rounds.

“There is massive excitement for EFC 67 this weekend for the season kick-off, and as always we are thrilled to host all these athletes and their fans at Carnival City,” said Michelle Smith, marketing manager of Carnival City.

Women will also be well represented on the main stage, with South Africa’s Danella Eliasov set to battle it out against the undefeated Italian, Ciara Penco, in the inaugural women’s strawweight championship.

Several other bouts are guaranteed to have EFC fans on the edge of their seats as nail-biting action unfolds and power, strength and stamina are measured between these athletes.
