Carnival City packed with Idols hopefuls

Thousands of excited and emerging singers descended on Carnival City on Saturday to audition for the 14th season of Idols SA.

Hundreds of hopefuls stood patiently in long queues for their moment in the spotlight.

The auditions were held in Carnival City’s Big Top Arena.

Although the excitement was overwhelming, only a few were expected to have received the coveted Golden Ticket, a pass into the next phase of the competition.

Many of the aspiring singers arrived at Carnival City early on Friday afternoon and spent the night on camping chairs, under blankets to be sure of a chance to audition.

People seeking fame and a career in singing came from as far as Piet Retief and Welkom but all the travelling and the long wait did not seem to dampen the spirits.

Kamohelo Mokatsanyane, who travelled from Soweto, was one of the many hopefuls who arrived on Friday and spent the night.

“It was a bit cold but I am very excited to be here,” she said on Saturday morning.

Mbasa Msana told the Herald that she was a little bit nervous but thrilled to be at the auditions.

“I have been singing since Grade One,” she added.

According to Carnival City’s marketing manager, Michelle Smith, they were excited to host the Idols SA auditions for the fifth consecutive year.

“We are excited to see what talent Mzansi produces this year as thousands of hopefuls line-up to be heard,” said Smith.

Heinz Winckler was the show’s first winner, followed by Brandon October, Elvis Blue and Lloyd Cele (who won a SAMA in 2012) as well as Khaya Mthetwa (who won a SAMA for his debut album, Move), Sasha-Lee Davids and Karabo who have all become big names in the industry, each in his/her own unique way.
