Murder accused wife sent to Weskoppies

This follows the accused’s intention to plead temporary insanity.

A 30-year-old woman accused of the murder of her husband in their Denneoord home in 2016 was this week referred to Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for mental observation.

She appeared in the Pretoria High Court on Monday and faces charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, defeating the ends of justice and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The victim (58) was shot once in the head as he watched TV in the Field Street property on the evening of April 11, 2016.

Police were told there had been a robbery at the home.

The accused and her mother – who was also once married to the victim – were arrested five days later.

The mother was married to him in the 1980s and they adopted the accused as a toddler.

Several years after the mother and victim divorced, he married the accused.

Their trials were separated and the mother (aged 55 at the time of her arrest) pleaded guilty as an accessory to murder.

She was sentenced to five years imprisonment of which she only has to serve 10 months before being released on correctional supervision.

The accused, who is currently pregnant, is out on bail.

The matter was postponed to July 30 so that she may undergo a psychological evaluation.
