‘Monster’ poker tour goes national

Sun International is taking the MonsterJam Poker Tour, the premium poker tournament for professionals and amateurs, nationwide in 2018.

Kicking off at Carnival City today (January 22), the MonsterJam Poker Tour (MJPT) invites both professional and amateur players to pit their skills against each other in a nationwide series and stand the chance of winning substantial cash prizes.

The event will see players raising their stacks at eight events over the course of seven days, culminating in the final table of the main event on February 4.

The tournament series is expected to generate an estimated prize pool of R5-million.

According to Sun International’s group manager for gaming, Maartin Olckers, the nationwide MJPT is inspired by the outrageously successful MJPT tournament which took place at Sun City in 2015.

The tournament attracted 619 players over seven days with a prize pool totalling over R5.3-million.

The MJPT 2018 will take this fast-growing, exhilarating sport to Carnival City (Gauteng), Sun City (North West province) and five other Sun International casinos, namely GrandWest (Cape Town), Wild Coast Sun (Eastern Cape), The Boardwalk (Eastern Cape), Sibaya (KwaZulu-Natal) and Time Square South Africa (Gauteng).

Each tour stop will feature a number of competitions and events to suit a wide range of players.

The winning players at each regional tournament will be ranked on a combined leader board, with the overall winner being crowned MJPT Player of the Year and winning a trip to play poker internationally.

“Taking the MJPT nationwide is the natural evolution for this exciting tournament featuring some of South Africa’s top players,” said Olckers.

“We are delighted to partner with MonsterJam Poker to take this world-class poker series to seven of our top South African casinos in 2018.”
