Don’t dump animals over our fence, SPCA urges
The after-hour kennels are there for a reason.
The manager of the Brakpan SPCA, Ming Church, has urged the public not to throw unwanted or stray animals over the fence of the premises, situated along Denne Road, after hours.
“We have after-hours kennels which are clearly marked, and these provide shelter, food, water and a blanket for the animal until we retrieve it from the kennel either in the evenings or the next morning,” explained Church.
“Our premises have electrical fencing, and throwing the animal over the fence into the SPCA grounds sets off the alarm and most importantly is dangerous for the animal, as the animal as well as the person can be harmed when the fence is touched.”

Church added that the animal then also has free run of the premises, which makes it difficult to capture it.
“We are also not aware that an animal has been put over the fence, and it will then go without food and water for a period of time until we become aware of it.
“The SPCA also has an employee living on the premises at all times, and the animal can be handed over to this person by driving to the second blue gate and hooting. The employee will take the stray or unwanted animal,” Church said.
“I cannot stress enough that our after-hours kennels are there for a reason, which is to alleviate the dumping of animals over the electrical fence.”
