Shirin Laher was appointed the principal of Anzac Primary School in June.

The Mackenzie Park resident is married and has two children, Taskeen (14) and La’eeq (17).

• Provide a brief description of your career history: Where did you start, which subjects did you teach, which grade?

I graduated in 1993 and was appointed as a level one teacher in 1994 at Benoni Primary School.

I also taught at the Benoni Muslim School and Pioneer Primary school, all of which served as the foundation towards my training and growth both personally and professionally.

Surprisingly, I’ve taught every grade from one to eight and taught all subjects offered in these grades.

• Who or what inspired you to become a teacher?

I am driven by the notion that every child should be given the same opportunity to learn.

I still have an unwavering love for children and a passion for education after all these years.

• How would your learners describe you?

Inspiring, firm yet friendly.

• When you were in school what subject provided the best learning experience for you?

Maths and science are my favourite subjects.

I always use every opportunity to build interest in these subjects which I believe to be the cornerstone for technology.

• What do you like most about your job?

The hugs from my junior learners.

• Is there any advice you would give a person who is starting out in your chosen career?

It’s all about balancing one’s professional and personal life.

All work and no play… a support system at home and work is of paramount importance.

• What do you see on the horizon for your line of work?

Unfortunately, educators don’t often get to see the fruits of their hard work.

It would be fantastic to have graduates of Anzac Primary School offering support to the school by ‘paying it foward’ so to speak.

• Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

I love the outdoors, sports, nature, animals and the kitchen.

• Who or what inspires you?

I love reading autobiographies by great leaders and scholars, both religious and academics.

• What do you feel you have bragging rights to?

That is something one should ask my staff, friends and family members.

•What is your favourite thing about Brakpan?

Everyone gets to be themselves in Brakpan without fear of intimidation.
