Brakpan Primary School joins Read to Lead campaign

Brakpan Primary School recently encouraged their learners to read more by holding a fun day filled with reading activities. The Drop All and Read and Walk to Read project was held on the school grounds after the Gauteng Education Department called on schools to take part in their Read to Lead campaign to increase literacy rates among young learners.

During the morning all learners, teachers and even the ground staff were seen actively reading on the school premises as part of the Drop All and Read activity.

Ground staff member Charlie Skhosana was seen enjoying a book.

Some learners were reading outside. Some learners were reading with each other, while others were listening to a story being read by their teacher.

For a full 30 minutes, every single person on the school premises was seen reading a book, newspaper or magazine.

Learners listen attentively as Chriska Ebersohn, a Grade Three teacher, reads a story to them.

Later that afternoon, wearing their team colours and carrying their team banners, the Grade Four to Seven learners got together in groups to do the Walk to Read.

Erna van der Walt, from the Education Department, also came to visit and to encourage the learners.

Excitement was in the air as the groups started the course, ready to tackle the activities that were given at the different stops.

The six stops had activities such as reading for fluency, a memory game, a game based on inference, a game on rhyming, putting a story into the correct order. The the last stop was a word jumble game.

Grade Six learners Thlotlo Racheku (left) and Luyanda Mcoza won the Walk to Read activity.

At the end of the course, everybody got together and sang a song about reading.

Van der Walt congratulated all the learners on doing so well and being so enthusiastic about reading.

It was a day filled with fun and laughter – one which will surely be repeated in the future.
