‘Panne’ beat Vereeniging again

After a shaky first round of Valke Peregrine League fixtures, Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV are certainly in the running for a semi-final spot.

The team, in the last few weeks, has started finding cohesion and winning momentum.

On Saturday, they travelled to the home of last year’s beaten finalists, Vereeniging.

Brakpan already had the mental advantage over Vereeniging after a dramatic late penalty secured a 15-13 victory at the Bosman Stadium back in May.

This time the “Panne” did the trick again, to win 17-13.

“The team is really starting to pick up on all the facets of the game which we had to work hard on to get the new team members up to scratch, but now we are seeing excellent results,” said club chairman Harry Nieuwenhuis.

“Taking into consideration that our champion side in 2016 lost 52-22 versus the same team in Vereeniging, this was indeed a brilliant result that we are proud of.

“To beat them twice with this side is even more enjoyable, to say the least.

“Theo Becker, Raymond Herron, captain Wikus van der Berg and Pieter Nel in particular destroyed them on the ground and our loose forwards and defence were something special to behold on the day.

“We are immensely proud of the team’s efforts this far, as with the other Brakpan teams as well.”

Tries were scored by Tommy Damba (centre), Tabu Tau (scrumhalf) and Hagen Mumba.

Mumba kicked one conversion.

The club’s second XV “Lilywhites” drew 17-17 on the day, while the youngsters of the u-21 set-up lost 27-17, but have still secured a semi-final berth.

This Saturday (July 1) the teams travel to Springs.

The first team in particular will be chomping at the bit to square up against their rivals.

“We need to rectify the unnecessary and last-minute loss in the first round to them,” added the chairman.

Brakpan’s first XV were defeated 23-17 during the Valke Rugby Union’s 70th anniversary celebrations at the Bosman Stadium on May 20.
