Hirsch’s Carnival celebrated World Sleep Day at Brakpan Primary School with a fun competition for the learners.
Hirsch’s regional stores came up with an idea to celebrate the day, which took place on Friday, to see how many children could fit onto a queen-size mattress for at least 30 seconds.
The top three schools with the most learners on a mattress will be able to donate the mattresses to an organisation of their choice.
The Hirsch’s Carnival celebration took place at the local primary school’s rugby fields on Friday.
Grade Four learners were chosen to participate in the competition, which is sponsored by Rest Assured and Cloud Nine every year. The purpose of the competition is to inform learners why a good night’s sleep is so important.
While the participating learners practiced, the others were kept busy by the Duba Duba lollipop mascot.
They were taught the Duba Duba dance and each enjoyed a Duba Duba pop.
“We have been working on a game plan the whole week. We were practicing every day and we hope all the hard work and effort the children have put in has paid off,” said Mo Samsoodeen, the school principal.
The learners’ strategy was to stand on the mattress and hold the person in front of them tightly.
After a few practices, the moment of truth arrived. The children counted down the 30 seconds and the Grade Seven learners walked around to ensure no one was injured or stepped off the mattress.
When the time was up, the children jumped in jubilation as Jenny-lee McDonald, from Hirsch’s Carnival, and Samsoodeen confirmed the final count – 60 learners made it onto the bed.
Update: Local school wins Hirsch’s nationwide competition
