Ekurhuleni Metro Police Chief resigns

Bafana Mahlabe handed in his resignation letter yesterday.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Chief Bafana Mahlabe has resigned from his post with immediate effect.

Mahlabe handed in his resignation letter to the acting city manager Dr Imogen Mashazi yesterday.

Announcing the news to the media this morning, Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina revealed that ‘in the letter Mr Mahlabe cited that he wishes to pursue business interests’.

“Although this development was unexpected, after carefully considering the matter and consultation with relevant stakeholders, I have accepted the resignation of the Chief of Police because it is my view that you must always avoid standing in someone’s way if they wish to pursue other ambitions.

Masina announced that the city had appointed the deputy chief of police in charge of logistics General Isaac Mapiyeye, who has 31 years’ experience in policing, as the acting chief of police with effect from December 1 until the position is filled within the next three months as prescribed by Legislation.

Despite the latest developments, Masina issued a stern warning to criminals emphasizing that Mr Mahlabe’s departure will not affect the work of the EMPD in fighting lawlessness in the region.

“Our vigilance will become even more visible during this festive season. Our approach continues to be a ‘Zero Toleranceto crime. If you are thug, commit crime at your own peril because we shall take no prisoners,” concluded Masina.
