Sunday to forget for United

It was a Sunday that won’t live long in the memory banks of those associated to United Cricket Club.

The club’s Premier XI played their first match at emerging club Kwa-Thema Cricket Club’s Prince Thethe Oval on October 24 and experienced an eye-opener of sorts after a 32-run defeat in a low-scoring affair in new conditions.

The Promotion League clash between United and Benoni Northerns Cricket Club that was set to be played on Hosking Park’s A-pitch was called off after heavy winds blew the pegged in covers off the wicket and rain seeped on to the deck.

The match in Kwa-Thema, however, did go forth.

United’s skipper Justin Gamble won the toss and put the hosts in to bat on a relatively untried new pitch.

It seemed to be a good call from the captain as his bowlers wrapped up the Kwa-Thema innings for 94 in 28.1 overs.

The Kwa-Thema bowlers, however, proved that they know how to play on their home turf and found the United batsmen wanting by skittling them out for 62 in 19.2 overs.

Rian van der Merwe (who scored 26 runs) was the only beacon of hope for United in the chase, but that was all to write home about for Gamble’s men.

They will be hoping that Mother Nature plays along nicely when they host Eastern Premier League new boys Alberton at Hosking Park on Sunday, October 30.
