Ekurhuleni city manager resigns

“The city manager felt that it was time to move on after spending seven years in a robust environment of municipal governance."

Ekurhuleni city manager Khaya Ngema resigned yesterday (Wednesday), and his last day in the office will be August 31.

He will, therefore, still chair the first council meeting since the election, on Tuesday, next week.

The inaugural council meeting was originally meant to take place tomorrow (Friday), but was moved to next week.

“After serving a full-term (2011-2016) and an additional two years, Ngema is set to pursue other professional interests,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

“The city manager felt that it was time to move on after spending seven years in a robust environment of municipal governance. During this period, he led a team entrusted to turnaround and stabilise the municipality,” Ekurhuleni’s head of communications and brand management, Rego Mavimbela, said.

Ngema will be remembered for his leadership that saw, amongst other things, Ekurhuleni turning the tide on wasteful expenditure since 2011.
