Child trafficking sex ring case postponed

The man faces extradition to Namibia.

The Brakpan man who was arrested for his involvement in a child trafficking sex ring in Swakopmund, Namibia, is a former police officer.

The man (45) , who was stationed at the Brakpan Police Station, was arrested at his Gardiner Avenue residence on Tuesday, last week.

The man’s identity is known to the Herald, but he cannot be named until he has pleaded to the charges.

He was sought by Interpol on charges of rape, human trafficking and three counts under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

The man was also wanted on charges of assault, intimidation and malicious damage to property.

It is believed he fled Namibia after his female accomplice was arrested.

The woman, Johanna Lukas, was found guilty in June, last year, on charges of trafficking and rape, after it was proven that she procured two teenage girls for sexual exploitation by the man, in 2012.

It was heard during her trial that the former policeman had sex with a 13-year-old girl on numerous occasions in April and May 2012, as well as with a second girl, in June 2012.

Lukas is reportedly the first person in Namibia to be convicted of trafficking children for sexual exploitation.

The man, who faces extradition to Namibia, appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and the case was postponed to Wednesday, May 11.

He remains in custody.
