Waner outlines plans for local university

Brakpan resident and business owner Ernest Waner has, over the last few years been pressing the City of Ekurhuleni to approve his proposal for a university in Brakpan.

Members of the public, as well as political representatives and other interested parties attended a meeting on Wednesday, last week, when Waner outlined and explained his plans for the Ekurhuleni University.

The purpose of the meeting was to create public awareness and to get various stakeholders on board.

Waner has been advocating the establishment of a university in Brakpan for more than five years.

According to him, a university based in Ekurhuleni will make education more affordable, because students will be able to attend a place of higher education closer to where they reside.

Waner’s vision is to incorporate Hosking Park, Jan Smuts Park, the Customer Care Centre and adjacent land owned by Ekurhuleni to house the university.

It has been proposed that the Daveyton Campus of the Vaal University of Technology also be moved to the site

Waner is of the opinion that perfect infrastructure exists and the factors contributing to his vision include:

• Significant land available for future development.

• Religious institutions, including churches, a synagogue and mosques in close proximity.

• Easy access to other towns from Ekurhuleni.

• Parking readily available in town and at nearby restaurants, bars, hotels and grocery stores.

• Superior sports fields and facilities are available.

• A library, municipal halls/offices, clinic, police station and magistrates court are all within walking distance.

• The OR Tambo International Airport is only 20km away.

People who would like to get involved with the initiative can contact Waner by email, on waners@tekomsa.net
