New name, new role for CMR

The CMR (Christelike Maatskaplike Raad), an organisation which has been serving the community of Brakpan for the past 50 years, has undergone a name change and facelift.

On Friday, last week, the name of CMR Brakpan officially changed to Tutela Family Care Brakpan, to align with the vision and values of the Tutela group.

The organisational culture makes provision for the rendering of services from a Christian perspective, principles and background, but with respect for all cultures, religions and faith groups.

“Tutela is a group of autonomous, faith-based organisations and provincial programmes that, as part of the church’s service and witness, and driven by our faith in the Triune God, participate in the missional calling of the church to the world, through social welfare services,” said Lourette van Heerden, assistant director: social services/brand manager of Tutela.

Tutela’s service initially started in 1932 as the “Armesorg Raad”, when the NG Kerk requested that something be done about the existing poverty crisis.

Since the late 1980s, services have been expanded and transformed to reach all people in need in various communities.

The council evolved over the years and, in 1994, the name changed to NGBD (NG Barmartigheidsdiens).

NGBD and all its service delivery programmes registered as NPOs during 1994, to meet government requirements.

NGBD reviewed their corporate identity and decided to change the name on September 30, 2014, to Tutela, to better fit their mission and values.

CMR Brakpan was founded on March 31, 1964, and has rendered social work services to the community of Brakpan over the past 50 years.

“The office has assisted 1 927 persons in need, irrespective of age, race, sex or religion during our 2013/14 book year,” said Ds Robert Geyser, executive officer of Tutela Family Care Brakpan.

“Approximately 40 per cent of our expenses are funded by government; the rest are funded by the church, private donors and fund-raising initiatives.

“In all our approaches we are committed to comprehensive care, which touches and strengthens our children and communities, so that they have the opportunity to lead productive and fulfilling lives.”
