New library will go ahead
Construction of the new Brakpan Library has come to a halt for now, but the metro has confirmed that the establishment of the new facility, at the Customer Care Centre in Elliot Avenue, will go ahead.
“The contract for the construction of the Brakpan Library was terminated in April 2015, due to non-performance,” said the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metro, Themba Gadebe.
“The procurement process for a second contractor, including pricing, is at an advanced stage and we are expecting to finalise it during this month.”
Good news for residents of Tsakane, however, is that the people in that area will soon also benefit from a new library.
A R16-million facility in Extension 11 will provide easy access and relief to library-users residing further than the old central Tsakane Library, which is currently servicing the vast community.
The construction process began in April 2015 and is set to be concluded in June, next year.
Upon its completion, the library will house an extensive collection of books, audio visual materials, modern IT equipment, study areas and access to amenities necessary for increasing literacy within the community.
“The city is on a drive to build libraries across Ekurhuleni, with the aim of keeping up with the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA)’s theme, ‘Connect @ Your Library’,” explained Gadebe.
“This theme is believed to resonate with library-users, as it encourages them to connect with each other, with knowledge and information, and the electronic resources, technology and professional support offered at their public library.
“The Ekurhuleni Metro has over 40 public libraries across the region and the construction of the new Tsakane Library will contribute invaluably towards building a conversant citizenry.”
