Jarvis retains his title

In April, the Herald told sports lovers to keep an eye on 11-year-old State Mines Country Club youngster Casey Jarvis.

The talented club-swinger from the local golf club again lived up to expectations, recently, when he emerged as the champion and defended his title in the 10 to 11-year-old category at the Optimist Junior Golf International Championships, at Palm Beach Gardens, in Florida, in the USA, for the second year in a row.

The State Mines golfer, a member of SA Kids Golf, fired rounds of 74, 71 and 71 to win on two-under-par 214, two strokes clear of Eli Tran, from Texas.

The tournament is widely regarded as the largest and best junior tournament in the world.

State Mines Country Club’s captain, Jim Neilson, congratulated the youngster on his successful retention of the title and described it as a “fantastic achievement”.

* Meanwhile, another State Mines junior golfer has also been keeping the club’s flag flying high.

Vaughn van Deventer won the Ekurhuleni Schools Golf Championship, at ERPM Golf Club, in Boksburg, over 36 holes, on August 3.

Thirteen schools competed in the event, with scoring working on a point-based system.

Van Deventer scored a first round 72 (36 points) and a second round 76 (32 points) to win the championship.
