Illegal truck stop in Brakpan North gets thumbs down

Truck drivers who have recently turned the corner of Hospital Road and Craven Street into a truck stop have found themselves on the wrong side of the law.

The Herald has received several complaints from concerned residents about the area being turned into a truck stop, attracting hawkers and damaging the pavements.

“My children used to walk to the Sherwood Shopping Centre, but this has become unsafe,” said a mother who asked not to be named.

“Many of the drivers park their big trucks and simply sleep there overnight.

“There are no facilities for these people, which makes me wonder where and how they wash and use the toilet.”

The Herald brought the situation to the attention of the EMPD and action was taken.

Spokesperson for the EMPD, Wilfred Kgasago, said that a precinct commander took it upon himself to monitor the location for two weeks, during which time the truckers were warned and made aware of their transgressions, as well as the inconvenience caused to residents in the area.

“All the trucks found parked overnight were issued with fines; 10 have been slapped with fines thus far,” said Kgasago

On Thursday, 30 July, one Nissan truck was impounded for having been left at the said location for seven consecutive days.

“The EMPD will continue monitoring the location to ensure that transgressors do not cause havoc with impunity,” added Kgasago.
