Local artist has big dreams

One of the highlights of his careers is the performance of his latest single, Beverly.

With a passion for music, up-and-coming songwriter and producer Jermaine Williams (Will) from Villa Liza dreams of travelling the world, representing his country.

The 27-year-old explained he fell in love with music at a young age.

“My older brother exposed me to music. He would often play hip-hop and R&B music at full blast in his room – to my mother’s annoyance. My mother also had a hand in my taste in music as she would tune into Kaya FM or Metro FM every Sunday, where they would play strictly soul and R&B,” said Will

He began his musical journey at 18, initially as a rapper, writing his own raps and navigating through a music production software called FL Studio, where he discovered his passion for beat making.

“It was not until 2020, during lockdown, when I switched to being a singer as a couple of friends told me I could sing and that I should practice more. During this time, I realised writing R&B or soul songs came more naturally than writing rap material. Since then, I have been investing my time in perfecting my craft. I even resigned from my steady job to dedicate all my time to my passion,” he added.

Exhale was Will’s debut studio album, with guest appearances by Ailuro, VERSEIKING, Jonny Grove and alternative producer BoArt.
His music career has been inspired by Tupac, Aaliyah, Usher, Sade, UB40, Michael Jackson, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Black Coffee and various R&B and soul singers from the 80s and late 90s.

One highlight of his career is the performance of his latest single, Beverly, on the music streaming platform Apple Music, a tune dedicated to his love for alcohol and coffee. Being those are beverages, that is where the title Beverly was derived from. He likened his experiences with his favourite beverages to an intimate relationship with a woman.

“It received great reception in the US and Japan, more than in South Africa. Within five weeks of its release, it has reached nearly 20 000 plays worldwide.” The official music video of the single Beverly is now on YouTube under my channel, Jermaine Will.

“I would like to reach a national audience and establish myself as one of the best sources of smooth, groovy, laid-back music within the R&B/soul community.”
