CGA sub-youth season to start this month

The season starts on September 30 and will conclude with the provincial champs on November 18.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) announced that its primary school sub-youth track and field season will begin with the first league meeting at the Germiston Stadium on September 30.

They will hold the league events at the Germiston Stadium. It will comprise three meetings, culminating in the provincial championships on November 18.

“The primary school age groups are developmental ages from seven to 13 years old. Over the years, we have had great athletes from these developmental age groups.

“We are calling on all clubs to send athletes in these age groups to compete,” said the CGA GM, Mandla Radebe.
After the provincial champs, the top talent will represent the province at the inter-provincials in Secunda on December 2.

The CGA took the top spot at the nationals last year.

The CGA league meeting dates:

• League one – September 30
• League two – October 14
• League three – November 3
• Provincial champs – November 18
• ASA Inter-Provincial Championships in Secunda – December 2.

Radebe said they hoped for a successful provincial season that would help them keep their number-one ranking.
“The league meetings will ensure the athletes have enough time to compete, to prepare and qualify for the inter-provincial championships in Mpumalanga.

“Last year, the CGA took the first position with 50 medals at the inter-provincials, and we are looking at retaining our number one spot this year,” he said.

The province won 18 gold, 19 silver and 13 bronze medals during last year’s inter-provincials at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria.

Benonians Chelsea van Dyk (silver in girls’ U11 1 200m) and Thato Sesoko (gold in girls’ U13 1 500m) were among CGA’s medal recipients last year.

The young runners from the Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) earned five medals for the club at the games.

Lihan Borman and Anika van Niekerk each won a silver medal, and Strauss Anzaret grabbed two bronzes. Wiane Louw got one bronze.

“We look forward to seeing you supporting us this season as we build up to the 2024 Olympics,” concluded Radebe.
